A Balance Sheet is a financial document prepared by a business, organization or individual at the end of a fiscal year or other period, which depicts the assets, liabilities and shareholder equity of the company. Based on the double entry bookkeeping system, the balance sheet helps assess the net worth of the company at a given point of time e.g. end of fiscal year or some other arbitrary time. The net worth is arrived at by finding the difference between all the assets owned and liabilities incurred.

A balance sheet is a formal statement depicting the book value of the concerned entity at a particular time. It is prepared internally or by one or more Certified Public Accountants and truly reflects the state of affairs of the entity. It is quite different from an income statement which is a statement about the income and expenses incurred during a particular period of time.

A truly photographic account of the current state of the entity is how a balance sheet may best be described. It is the most used financial statement and, in fact, is the only one that reflects the state of the entity at a given point of time rather than over a span of time. The two basic features of a Balance Sheet are assets and liabilities.

Since the business may own a number of assets in the form of built-up inventories of unsold stock, plant and machinery, buildings and equipment, these are not always readily convertible into cash and so form the core of the asset valuation. On the flip side, there are creditors who need to be paid as well as tax authorities that have tax payments outstanding and these form the liability base. In addition there is the original capital and a share of profits not withdrawn by the proprietors.

Any modern balance sheet will have three main components; assets, liabilities and shareholder equity. It is usual to set out all assets at the top of the balance sheet before presenting the liabilities. The difference between assets and liabilities constitutes the net worth or net assets of the company. This net worth or net assets of the company is equal to the shareholders equity.

Valuing equity suffers from some discrepancies because sometimes the value to a purchaser of a business via the net worth may not be what is revealed by the balance sheet figures, due to unrecorded material facts. This may happen when property has not yet been revalued.

Also, assets may have been valued keeping in mind that the concern will return a profit. Under such circumstances the break-up value of assets may be more than if the business is running into losses. So whenever someone wants to know how a company is doing, a well documented and accurate answer is very desirable. And the best way to showcase the entity’s success is through its balance sheet.

A lot of people as well as different organizations will surely be interested in the performance of various companies and so they turn to the company’s balance sheet for more information. In addition, the owners of entities are also constantly keeping track of how their enterprises are doing. Creditors, before extending credit, would like to assure themselves that the enterprise will repay the credit. Everyone with any interest in financial dealings with an entity will, of necessity, turn to the balance sheet for guidance.

Balance sheet is the common title of this financial document but Statement of Financial Position is also one other term used to describe it.

In order to educate yourself on the different terms and practices related to Pink Sheets, read along as we try to answer the common FAQs about them.

What are the Pink Sheets?

The Pink Sheets is an electronic quotation service which displays quotes for over the counter (OTC) securities in real time. It is not a registered stock exchange company, and it is not affiliated with the NYSE or NASDAQ.

What are the different stocks being traded in Pink Sheets?

The different stocks being offered in Pink Sheets are penny stocks and other over the counter (OTC) securities. Penny stocks have share prices pegged at less than $5.

What is the difference between OTCBB and Pink Sheets?

The Pink Sheets is not governed by NASDAQ or other SEC regulated stock exchange companies. Companies who want to trade in Pink Sheets are not required to submit financial papers. On the other hand, OTCBB or Over the Counter Bulletin Board is governed by NASDAQ, which means that the companies that want to enter OTCBB should be able to complete the requirements as required by NASDAQ. Pink Sheets also offer tickers and an electronic trade negotiating system to market makers, which OTCBB is not offering.

How can a company get quoted in Pink Sheets?

If your company wants to get quoted in Pink Sheets, you must first find a market maker who will quote the stock prices for you. Market makers are also known as broker-dealers. Your market maker should be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and he should also be a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD).

What different kinds of companies are quoted in Pink Sheets?

There are many companies listed in Pink Sheets, but the majority of them are:

Small start up companies that have not yet grown enough to meet the requirements of NASDAQ or SEC to be publicly listed.

Large foreign companies that are publicly listed in their home countries, but do not pass the requirements of being listed in the US. The most common reason for this is that the financial statements of these foreign companies are not in conformity with the GAAP, which is required to be listed in the US.

Companies that volunteered to be delisted and try their hand at over the counter (OTC) stocks trading.

Banks and companies which are thinly traded.

How do pink sheets work?

If you are an investor who wants to trade on pink sheets, you must contact a brokerage firm to act as the agent between you and the market maker in pink sheets. The stockbroker will get quotes from the electronic data market system and will enter the details online. The order will then be sent to the trader, either by computer or telephone.

If the trader is also the market maker for the specific stock ordered, then he will execute the order. If he is not the direct market maker, he will forward it to the market maker who is offering the best price for the security in subject, who will in turn execute the order.

After this process, a transaction report will be sent to the stockbroker, which he will relay to the investor through a transaction confirmation.

1. A Book of Music Is Not Technically Sheet Music

The American Heritage Dictionary defines Sheet Music as “Compositions printed on unbound sheets of paper”. So books of music script would not (technically) be classed as sheet music.

2. “Sheet Music” Was The Title of an Album by 10CC

This was the second album written by 10CC which reached number nine in the UK album charts, and number eighty one in the USA. The 1974 release by the Manchester (England) band included the singles “The Wall Street Shuffle” and “Silly Love”.

3. Sheet Music or Score?

These two terms actually mean the same thing, as score is the more generic description of Sheet Music. There are several types of score including “full score”, “miniature score”, “piano score” etc. Score can also be used to refer to incidental music written for a play, TV or film.

4. The First Printed Sheet Music Book Appeared in 1457

The “Mainz Psalter” was the first book printed to include music notation. It was printed in Mainz, Germany but still had to have the notation filled in by hand!

5. The First Machine Printed Music Appeared in the 1473

The first sheet music publications printed on machines didn’t appear unitl 1473, almost 20 years after Gutenburg had invented the printing press. Before this most sheet music was written by hand! This was essentially when the Music industry as we know it began.

6. Chappell & Co Were Founded in 1810

Chappell and Co were founded in 1810 by Samuel Chappell, Francis Tatton Latour and Johann Baptist Cramer. They started by selling and publishing sheet music. It was only later that Chappell & Co began selling the pianos that they became so famous for. Chappell & Co now operate as two separate companies; the publishing company “Warner/Chappell Music”, and the music retailer “Chappell of Bond Street” (on Wardour Street, London).

7. Manuscript Paper is the Blank Form of Sheet Music

Manuscript paper is blank sheet music pre-printed with (typically) two sets of six staves on a line, marked with a “Clef” to indicate the key and pitch of the piece of music. It is sometimes referred to in the USA as “staff paper”. Manuscript paper can also be used to notate music for drums and guitar tablature! You can get hold of a blank piece of sheet music here: http://www.visionmusic.com/manuscript/paper.html

8. The Earliest Piece of Sheet Music was from 1400 BC

Clay tablets (transcribed by Prof. Anne Kilmer in 1972) containing the cuneiform signs of the Hurrian language contained a completed hymn with both words and music. The hymn related to the Moon God’s wife Nikal, and included instructions for vocals and harp.

9. Tablature Tells You Where To Put Your Fingers

As apposed to the traditional notation of sheet music, Tablature (or Tabulature/Tab) transcribes the music with the placement of fingers written as numbers. It is usually written for fretted instruments such as guitars, but can also be used for percussion and some other instruments.

10. Free Guitar Tabs Sites Are Not All Legal

But don’t worry, it is the websites themselves that are the only ones to be concerned. As of Monday December 12, 2005, distributing free tablature of copyrighted music using the Internet is considered illegal by the international music industry.

Several free tab sites were shut down in 2006 as a results of legal pressure from music publishers including MXtabs.net (now back online as a legitimate resource), and also Guitar Tab Universe who later re-launched as “Music Student and Teacher Organization” (MuSATO) claiming that as an educational resource they were not longer in breach of copywrite. The music industry maintain their opposition to free tab download websites.

This sheet music article was provided by Chappell of Bond Street, London (Est. 1811) with the intention of spreading the word of sheet music.

With increasing frequency I keep finding silk bedding on the shelves of retailers and bedding companies alike. Five years ago silk bedding was the territory of specialist bedding shops, sporting a varied image from one of the ultimate luxury to the downright tacky. Nowadays silk bedding is everywhere to be seen â?? so whatâ??s changed?

Well, manufacturing techniques for one. From the harvest of silk all the way through to the finished product the techniques have been honed and mastered. After all the Chinese have had five thousand years of practice in silk production. With the onset of modern machining and technology silk fabric is finer and more durable than ever before. Because of the increased durability brought on by modern machining techniques, silk bedding can now be offered as a legitimate alternative to cotton or polyester bedding products.

Apart from the increased durability silk bedding offers some surprising benefits not found in more conventional bedding. The natural amino acids that occur in silk are sympathetic to our hair and skin, allowing a rejuvenating process to occur throughout the night. In addition to this silk has the amazing ability to keep us warm in when itâ??s cold and cool when itâ??s warm. Silk does this by allowing some of the heat generated by our bodies to escape through the fibres. Cotton and polyester act as insulators, whereas silk naturally allows our bodies temperatures remain more constant.

Silk, like all other bedding products ranges in quality and price. On the lower end of the scale is Haboati, or wild silk. Although Habotai silk sports many of the advantages of silk fibre, it lacks durability and is therefore more suited to clothing and scarves. Habotai silk should not be a first choice for bedding products. At the top end of the market is 100% mulberry silk. Mulberry silk is extremely durable, and ideal for silk bedding. If you would like to know more about what to look for when purchasing silk bedding, the silksleep (dot) com website is a good resource.

Part of the reason silk bedding has not been â??main streamâ? until now has been the difficulty in correctly cleaning the products. Today most washing machines have a silk function and there are a number of excellent silk detergents on the market. Perhaps the best of these is a product called Tenestar which has been specifically manufactured to maintain the properties of silk while cleaning. Any fine purveyor of silk bedding should offer both advice and products for the care and cleaning of silk.

The next time you come across silk bedding, donâ??t dismiss it out of hand. The enhanced care, benefits and durability of silk bedding in recent years has made these wonderful products well worth a second look.

Silk duvets have been all the buzz this winter. I have seen them all over the internet and in some of the better retail stores while out and about. There seems to be quite a bit of press and excitement about silk duvets, though very few people know how they work or even why they are better than their polyester or down counterparts.

We would like this article to dispel a few myths about silk duvets and perhaps help people better understand how they work and if they really want one.

There are many varieties of silk duvets, listed below are a few of the more popular variations.

1.100% Mulberry silk filled duvets. These are the “Rolls Royce” of silk duvets. Mulberry silk in it’s long fibre form is renowned for being the best for use in silk duvets and silk bedding products. Mulberry silk duvets generally have a little inspection zip stitched discretely somewhere into the duvet. This is there to allow the purchaser to inspect the silk. This is really a good idea, as without an inspection zip how would you know what kind of filling your “silk duvet” has.

2.Silk filled duvets with silk casings. Now there is a debate out there about the point of having a silk filled duvet covered in cotton. The purists argue that silk cased duvets are in fact superior to those cased in cotton. This is not actually correct. Many cotton covered silk duvets are very effective and even have certification in keeping dust mites to a minimum. One of the issues of silk cased silk duvets is the quality of the silk case. Many manufacturers use lesser silks for their casings to save money. This is great in the short term but in the long term the duvet will not have the longevity that cotton cased duvets enjoy.

3.Box stitched silk filled duvets. You may have noticed that your duvet is stitched into neat little boxes. This is to stop the down or polyester from bunching up inside your duvet. The boxes work well for these duvets and are all well and good however silk duvets work a little differently. There are two reasons silk duvets may be stitched into pockets. One (the most common reason) is that the silk used is short fibre cheap off cuts which are useless as a duvet filling. The second is the retailer just hasn’t grasped the concept of a silk duvet. Good silk duvets are made using long fibre mulberry silk. Because the fibers of silk are long there is no need to pocket stitch the duvet. Silk duvets should be tacked to stop the silk from moving about too much in the casing but never boxed stitched.

Silk duvets are probably the best duvets money can buy, as long as you know what to look for. We hope this article will help you make a choice which may lead to many years of fabulous sleep under your new silk duvet.
